Ice jams make a mess around the Quad Cities
January 10, 2008

Daytime temperatures in much of Iowa have been high enough over the past few days to melt a lot of snow and ice, but overnight temperatures are still often below freezing, causing a problem with ice jams along rivers and streams, especially near the Quad Cities. The freeze/thaw cycle is an early reminder of what's on the way in the spring, when heavy rains are likely to induce at least some flooding around the Midwest. Now is the time to ensure that sump pumps are properly installed and operating.
