Cost to reduce phosphorus runoff in Iowa: $1 billion

Research from Iowa State University suggests that it could cost Iowa farmers more than a billion dollars to reduce runoff into the state's rivers and streams, which in turn has a major impact on nitrates in the state's drinking water. Farming practices throughout the Midwest are also being accused of damaging the Gulf of Mexico.
