Southeastern drought serves as a reminder of the connection between energy and water
December 9, 2007

Drought obviously affects agricultural production in serious ways, and the mounting evidence is that we may be in a period of greater swings back and forth between drought and flooding. Not only does that mean that better crop engineering may be necessary, it also highlights the importance of energy in the process. Any time water has to be pumped, energy is used -- in large quantities. The more energy we use to move water into dry places, the less may be available for other purposes. Smart approaches like better wastewater treatment, collection of excess stormwater, and water recycling can all help reduce the impact of energy use.
