Creek near Muscatine contaminated with barbecue sauce
December 5, 2007

In what certainly qualifies as one of the ten oddest cases of water pollution in 2007, 500 gallons of barbecue sauce leaked into Mud Creek near Muscatine. The event happened when a piece of equipment malfunctioned, pouring barbecue sauce onto the roof of the Heinz plant and allowing it to leak into the creek via the gutters. While 500 gallons sounds like a lot (and it certainly is -- enough to fill about twelve oil barrels), it's rather small in pumping terms. A 3" portable trash pump can pump that same volume in about two minutes.
