USDA pours money into Nebraska to buy back water rights

In an effort to reduce demand on the Republican River, the USDA is giving Nebraska $800,000 to help retire farmland from irrigation. Water is important not only as an input to agricultural products (for instance, cattle can consume 25 gallons of water every day), but also as the means of transportation for products shipped down the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.
