EPA Stream Survey Says 69% of Midwest Streams Are "Fair" or "Poor"
May 5, 2006

The first Wadeable Streams Survey measured water quality in streams that aren't deep enough to be navigable. They concluded that nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment were the worst pollutants found in most waterways around the country. Excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) are mainly the result of agricultural runoff, which highlights the difficult trade-off between having enough food and protecting water quality.
