UK plans to give up on defending several towns against rising seas
November 14, 2007
After a severe flood caused by a giant tidal surge, the government has admitted that several towns will be evacuated and allowed to wash into the sea
over the next 30 years because it's no longer feasible to pay to protect them. Flood controls like pump systems
, sluice gates
and upstream level-control gates
can be costly, but that cost is always to be balanced against the value of what they're protecting.
