More Flushable Products Means More Greasy, Sticky Sewage

March 8, 2006

As the number of "flushable" products -- from cat litter to toilet brushes -- increases, so does the proportion of grease and solids in wastewater systems. The contamination doesn't have to be hazardous to make more work for the wastewater plant. Just increasing the solids load is enough to cause big cost increases for treatment, which is passed along to water users.
