Direct losses due to Nebraska drought: $342 million
August 31, 2006

Direct losses due to drought in 2006 are estimated at a third of a billion dollars. The secondary losses are even greater, as are the cumulative losses after six or seven straight years of drought in Nebraska. Lake McConaughy is so low that irrigation allotments for 2007 will be even lower than this year's - and there's some chance that they won't get anything at all. 22 Iowa counties are also requesting Federal drought disaster assistance. The USDA has announced a $780 million relief package for agriculture.
