ISU Climatologist Says Corn Belt Overdue for Drought

April 4, 2006

Elwynn Taylor says the Corn Belt usually has a major drought every 16 to 20 years. It's been 23 years since the last one. Fortunately, the warm weather of this past winter meant that the light precipitation that did fall soaked into the ground reasonably well, so 2006 probably won't be the year (though La Nina patterns are adding some pressure to the contrary). However, it does mean that now is a smart time to start preparing for the next drought.
