High Winds in Strong Storm Knock Out Power to 250,000 San Franciscans

March 1, 2006

A storm with winds up to 71 mph left a quarter-million homes and businesses without power in the San Francisco Bay area on Monday night. It's easily forgotten that the very same storms that bring heavy rains are often the same ones that cause power outages. This creates a double-jeopardy situation for pump stations: High incoming storm flows and the risk that they'll be without the electricity needed to run the pumps. Portable lift stations and lift stations with engine backup are valuable ways to ensure that a city without power isn't a city without pumps.
